“OCD and the Brain” awarded the 2024 ERC Public Engagement with Research Award

Prof. Tobias Hauser from University of Tübingen and UCL was awarded the 2024 ERC Public Engagement with Research Award for the “OCD and the Brain” Project ‘for co-creating an accessible, interactive resource on obsessive-compulsive disorders, bridging neuroscience and community needs for real impact.’   The ‘OCD and the Brain’ project, led by Professor Tobias Hauser, aimed to bridge the gap between neuroscience research and the OCD community by co-producing an engaging, available online resource for young people living with OCD, their parents, and their caregivers. Recognising a disconnect between research and real-world experiences, the project brought together researchers, charities, public engagement specialists, and the OCD community in a series of creative workshops and focus groups. This collaboration resulted in a user-friendly website that conveys complex neuroscience tailored to the community’s needs. Innovative Online Toolkit Makes OCD Research Accessible

The “National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement” has highlighted our “OCD and the Brain” project that developed an online toolkit to make OCD brain research more accessible. The initiative, led by University College London (UCL) and University of Tübingen, brought together researchers, OCD charities, and people with lived experience. Through co-production workshops, participants shaped a user-friendly resource addressing the gap between scientific research and practical experiences. “OCD and the Brain” Hub Now Available in German

The knowledge hub “OCD and the Brain,” developed by researchers, charities, and lived experience experts to inform the public about the lesser-known brain effects of OCD, has expanded to the German-speaking world. Professor Tobias Hauser and his team identified a significant lack of resources in German-speaking countries and addressed this gap with the support of the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung. Thanks to their backing, a German website has been launched, reaching a wide audience. The initiative has also garnered media attention, with coverage by the German news channel SWR (read here), the German newspaper Schwäbisches Tagblatt (read here), the German health portal (read here) and the German Center for Mental Health “DZPG” (read the German article here, or the English version here).
